Mary Mary is an American contemporary gospel duo, consisting of sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell (born April 29, 1972)[1] and Trecina "Tina" Atkins-Campbell (born May 2, 1974).[1] The duo are often credited along with Kirk Franklin for broadening the fan base of urban contemporary gospel in the 2000s by introducing elements of soul music, hip hop, funk and jazz. Mary Mary broke onto the music scene with their popular song "Shackles (Praise You)"—which is considered one of the pioneering songs of urban contemporary gospel music. The group's name, as stated in an interview is inspired by the two famous Mary's from the Bible; Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, and Mary Magdalene. [2]
Their debut album Thankful (2000) was certified Platinum. In addition, the duo has released three Gold albums: Incredible (2002), Mary Mary (2005), and The Sound (2008) which have all charted No. 1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums. They have also received three Grammys, among other awards. In 2011, they released their fifth studio album Something Big with the hit single "Walking".
In March 2012, they began their own television series, Mary Mary, on WeTV, which has been such a success that they are in the process of making a second season, which is due to begin in December 2012. Their most recently released album is their first compilation album, Go Get It (2012), with the hit single of the same name.

Early years

The sisters were born Erica Monique Atkins and Trecina Evette Atkins in California. The Atkins sisters grew up as part of a large family of nine children in Inglewood, California. Their parents are mother, Thomasina, an evangelist and choir director at the Evangelistic Church of God in Christ, and father, Eddie, a youth minister. Their parents were married and divorced three times and are currently separated[citation needed].
Due to their proximity in age, the two sisters grew up closer to one another than to any of their seven siblings.[1] The Atkins children are: Darrel (born 1965; the only living boy – as the second boy had died as a child); Maliea (born 1967); Erica and Tina (born 1972 & 1974); Delisa (who was originally a third member); Thomasina (known as Goo Goo who is also their stylist) (born 1979); Alana (born 1985) and Shanta (born 1986). Thomasina and Alana sometimes sing back up for their big sisters.[1]
The sisters quickly entered the world of church choirs, traveling gospel shows, and some television productions. All eight Atkins children were on the Bobby Jones Gospel show on BET.
The sisters had their sights set on making music a career and enrolled at El Camino College to study voice. There they ran up against the divide between academic music studies and the popular musical world. "We had to study classical and sing arias, which was fine," Erica told the Times, "but the teachers would tell us if we sang anything else it would damage our instrument".
The sisters toured with the 1995 Michael Matthews traveling gospel show Mama I'm Sorry and Sneaky. Each sister subsequently toured as a backup singer for a variety of R&B acts, including Brandy.

Music career

A meeting with producer Warryn Campbell led to their song publishing deal with the giant EMI music conglomerate and a series of songs that landed on movie soundtracks. They wrote "Dance" and performed it with Robin S. for the soundtrack to the 1998 film Dr. Dolittle; they performed "Let Go, Let God" for The Prince of Egypt. Several of their songs were recorded by 702. The sisters' profile in the gospel industry was raised when their songs "Time To Change" and "Yeah" were recorded by Yolanda Adams on Mountain High... Valley Low. At the same time, Mary Mary as a musical entity took shape. They have won multiple awards, including three Grammys. On December 23, 2010, Mary Mary along with Bebe & Cece Winans featuring the West Angeles Church of God in Christ Choir performed on The Tonight Show.[3]

Thankful (2000)

The duo was subsequently signed to Columbia Records/C2 Records and decided to perform under the name Mary Mary, honoring Mary, the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. They were first gospel act to record for the industry giant Columbia Records since Tramaine Hawkins in the mid-1990s. Their first single, "Shackles (Praise You)" became a crossover hit, being popular with gospel, R&B, and pop audiences. It was a Top 5 R&B and Top 10 pop hit, and peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became the first gospel song in five years to crack the R&B top ten and gained wide exposure on the MTV video cable channel. The album was a huge success because it offered a younger, hipper version of gospel that audiences could relate to. Their debut album, Thankful was released in May 2000. It peaked at No. 1 on the Gospel album chart and at No. 59 of the overall Top 200 chart, and was certified Platinum for shipments of one million copies in the USA. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. The second single "I Sings" features rapper BB Jay. Both singles were also hits in the UK and Europe, and to this day remain popular with Christian youths in the US, Latin America, and Europe. Their only Top 10 UK hit to date is "Shackles (Praise You)", which reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart in June 2000. The follow-up "I Sings" peaked at UK No. 32.[4]

Incredible (2002)

With their second album Incredible, the duo was able to maintain their success. Soon after its July 2002 release it was No. 1 on the Gospel chart and was able to enter the Top 20 of the Top 200 album chart. Incredible was later on certified Gold for 500,000 copies sold in the United States. The album's singles were In The Morning and I Try. While this album charted higher than their debut, sales were lower. The duo attributed the lower sales to less aggressive promotion due to label switchovers and the advent of music piracy.

Mary Mary and A Mary Mary Christmas (2005–06)

After taking time off to have children, Mary Mary released their self-titled third album, Mary Mary, in July 2005. It became the duo's first album to enter the Top 10 on Billboard and was later on certified Gold for sales of 500,000 copies. The first single "Heaven" contained a sample from seventies soul trio the Honey Cone's "Want Ads". Heaven made history and broke chart records as it had an unprecedented nine week run as the No. 1 record on Billboard's Gospel Radio chart. The second single, "The Real Party (Trevon's Birthday)" debuted at No. 43 on the Gospel Radio Chart. The third single, "Yesterday", also became a hit, especially on the Adult R&B charts where it peaked at No. 10. On the R&B/Hip Hop chart, the song became their second biggest hit since "Shackles" in 2000, reaching the No. 50. The album's final single, "Believer" indicated testimonies of being a Christian. The song hit No. 33 on the Gospel Radio chart.
On October 10, 2006, the duo released their fourth studio album, a Christmas project entitled A Mary Mary Christmas.

The Sound (2008)

On October 21, 2008, the recording group released their fifth studio album, The Sound.[5][6] The lead single "Get Up" was released digitally via iTunes on July 15, 2008. The Sound saw Mary Mary achieve even greater success in the mainstream market; the album sold over 37,000 copies in its first week, and was their best charting album to date, debuting No. 7 on the Billboard 200, No. 2 on the US R&B chart, and topping the gospel and CCM charts. The album held the No. 1 position on the Billboard Gospel Album chart for over six months since its release.[7] Warryn Campbell again returned to produce the album and saw collaborations with Kierra Sheard, David Banner, Marvin Winans, Daryl Coley, Andrae Crouch, Rance Allen, Dorinda Clark Cole, Joe Ligon, Walter Hawkins, Tramaine Hawkins, and Karen Clark Sheard. In Spring 2009 "God In Me" began achieving crossover success (as Shackles had nine years earlier), reaching No. 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Play.
The duo (along with Warryn Campbell) was nominated as songwriters at the 52nd Grammy Awards in the Best Gospel Song category for "God in Me" while the Israel Houghton song they were featured on "Every Prayer" was also nominated. They went on to win the award. After the awards, they were invited to participate in the remake of We Are The World to benefit Haiti after the earthquake. The album also won Mary Mary four Stellar Awards on January 16, 2010.

Something Big (2011)

In 2009, Mary Mary commenced recording their sixth studio album. Originally titled OMG, the project was renamed Something Big after R&B singer Usher had a hit single, "OMG" in 2010. The album was released on March 29, 2011. The duo released the lead single, "Walking," in the fall of 2010. A video was shot in January 2011 in Santa Ana, CA.[8] Mary Mary debuted the title track "Something Big" on the BET Celebration of Gospel 2011, while "Something Bigger" served as a B-side to "Walking". The second single from the album was "Survive." The video debuted on July 27, 2011.

Go Get It (2012)

On February 13, 2012, Mary Mary debuted their new single, "Go Get It", from the greatest hits compliation album of the same name, at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, California. A music video was also made for the single and released on April 20, 2012. The performance was shown in the season finale of their reality TV series, Mary Mary (on WEtv), which began airing March 29, 2012. The album was officially released on May 8, 2012. It features one other new track, "Sunday Morning", along with eleven remixed and remastered hits from their previous albums.
In efforts to promoting "Go Get It," Mary Mary has announced a "Go Get It Tour." The tour is in 10 different cities across the U.S, beginning in Jacksonville, FL on October 25 and running through November 17 in Hampton, VA. Support acts include: Isaac Carree, VaShawn Mitchell, Anthony Brown & Group TherAPy, Sunday’s Best Finalist Jessica Reedy and Anita Wilson.
On December 5, 2012, it was revealed that they scored a double Grammy nomination under the categories of Best Gospel/Contemporary Music Performance and Best Gospel Song, for "Go Get It".

Controversy and criticism

Although the Campbell sisters have been in the urban Gospel industry for years, they have been criticized for their "worldly" sound, most notably in the song "God in Me", and allegations that the song promotes "prosperity gospel". [21] The controversy grew when they worked with T-Pain for "God in Me"[citation needed]. Since then, the sister duo has said in interviews that they would like to work with more secular artists.

Yolanda Adams Biography

Ask Yolanda Adams what she loves about her music and ministry. The answer is as warm, embracing, and reflective as her songs. 'The music brings joy. I truly believe that my songs bring the answers and the solutions, as opposed to just talking about the problems. My music at its core is joyful.'

Joyful, uplifting, inspiring, affirmative, exuberant, playful, and universal in its appeal and intention – that is the music of Yolanda Adams. The message and ministry of this Grammy-winning Gospel/Adult Contemporary superstar is abundant with love, faith, rhythm, and wisdom. It is delivered by one of the most persuasive and popular voices in contemporary Gospel. Working with some of the biggest names in pop, R&B, hip-hop, and Gospel, Yolanda Adams's career has been marked by a string of hugely successful albums, sold-out tours, stand-out TV appearances, and a desire to incorporate into her music a multitude of genres and influences.

'It's vitally important to keep growing now that people know me and my music,'she says. 'We've been blessed enough to impact so many lives, both in and out of the typical Gospel market, so on each album it's important to keep reaching outward so that even more people can get inspiration from what we do. Luckily, I don't have to be anybody but Yolanda, because people don't expect me to be anything other than who I am. For an artist, it's a great place to be.'

A lifelong resident of Houston, Texas, Yolanda grew up in a household filled with spirit, soul, and songs. Her mother studied music, and Yolanda and her five younger siblings heard everything from jazz to classical to rhythm and blues. She soaked up the sounds of Gospel legends James Cleveland and the Edwin Hawkins Singers, jazz icon Nancy Wilson, and pop/R&B great Stevie Wonder. That wide swath of sonic textures, combined with years in the church choir, would guide Yolanda – both as a performer and a person.

Word of Yolanda's talent began to make its way into the close-knit Gospel music community and before long the former schoolteacher caught the attention of the prolific composer/producer Thomas Whitfield. With his assistance, Yolanda recorded 1987's JUST AS I AM, which was released on a small Gospel label. The album drew comparisons to Aretha Franklin and lead to subsequent releases on Tribute Records (now Verity Records). 1991's Through The Storm earned Yolanda several Stellar Awards. Four years later, the R&B-infused More Than A Melody garnered Yolanda her first Soul Train Lady of Soul Award and Grammy nomination. Along with the accolades, More Than A Melody 'broke'Yolanda to a wider audience and established her as a force, in and out of the music industry.

Yolanda began to make a name as a live act and her galvanizing concerts became the stuff of legend. The excitement was captured on 1996's YOLANDA...LIVE IN WASHINGTON, which brought her another Stellar Award and another Grammy nomination, and lead to her signing with Elektra Records. Yolanda's first release on the mainstream powerhouse was 1999's groundbreaking MOUNTAIN HIGH...VALLEY LOW.

A testament not only to the power of faith but also the possibilities of collaboration, MOUNTAIN HIGH...VALLEY LOW was an album that preached not only to the converted but also to fans of urban music. Working with A-list producers like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and Keith Thomas, Yolanda made the cross over without watering down or compromising her message, and fans and critics took notice. Typical of the reviews was one that stated, 'much of the album recalls Stevie Wonder or Bob Marley, where spirituality is at the center but it doesn't limit the musical expression.' The album would go multi-platinum, receive the Grammy in 2000 for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album and the first American Music Award for Inspirational Artist of the Year, win several Stellar Awards, and spawn the hugely successful Sisters In the Spirit Tour. That journey – also featuring Shirley Caesar, Mary Mary, and Angela Christie – became the inspiration for Yolanda's acclaimed second live collection, The Experience. That same year Yolanda also released her first holiday album, Christmas With Yolanda Adams, and gave birth to her daughter, whom Yolanda lovingly describes as 'a very good child, in and out of the womb.'

Motherhood didn't slow Yolanda down. With baby in tow, she continued to bring her praise songs to sold-out stages. In 2001, she entered the studio to record the richly satisfying BELIEVE. That album – like her newest effort, DAY BY DAY – reunited Yolanda with the innovative group of producers who had created Mountain High...Valley Low. 'Whenever you work with people that you're familiar with, they know your heart and what you like,'she notes. 'They know that your message is and that you want to help people. So it's pretty cool to be able to work with your friends, and I've been blessed to do so in the past and on my new album.'

2005's DAY BY DAY marks Yolanda's first album for Atlantic Records. Due to restructuring at her label, she found herself on hiatus for nearly four years, though as she notes, 'The great thing about Gospel is that you don't have to have an album every year in order to keep working.' Yet despite the time off, Yolanda was far from idle. She kept touring and began to lay the groundwork for her Voice of an Angel Foundation, which focuses on mentoring high school students nationwide in order to help them find a career in education. The foundation received its non-profit certification in the winter of 2005 and will hold its maiden mentoring camp next summer. 'Education is one of the greatest rewards for me – not only to instruct young people but also to mold them into great thinkers.'

Yolanda is also heavily involved in other children's issues. She works closely with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources to ensure that kids in low-income areas receive immunizations. Along with that nationwide program, Yolanda lends her energy and commitment to a number of other child-based organizations, including The Children's Defense Fund and Houston charities such as juvenile diabetes and The Escape Center. 'I'm very involved with kids because after being a teacher for seven years, I just can't stop loving the kids. I am a teacher forever.'

With her unerring sense of humanity and her compassionate message, Yolanda Adams has touched audiences worldwide, and they in turn have made their impact upon her. 'I believe that fans enhance your career. They draw out of me what they need and that's how I'm able to write the songs. It inspires me to feel their love and appreciation. It's like what Sally Fields said when she won the Oscar, 'You like me! You really like me!'I never take that for granted, and each year and each album I am humbled that there are people who want to hear my songs. It's truly amazing.' It's truly the grace and favor of God.

Yolanda Adams All Music Guide Biography

Another in the line of gospel artists putting the soul and fervor back in R&B music, Yolanda Adams was a school teacher in Houston during the mid-'80s and occasionally did modeling work. Her mother had studied music while at college, so Adams grew up listening to jazz and classical music as well as gospel artists such as James Cleveland and the Edwin Hawkins Singers and R&B vocalists like Stevie Wonder and Nancy Wilson.

Yolanda Adams' debut album, Just as I Am appeared in 1988 on Sounds of Gospel. Though she was initially criticized in the Christian community for embracing secular music and fashion to accompany her gospel-themed music, the growth of publicly popular gospel in the mid-'90s pushed her into the spotlight; Adams toured with Kirk Franklin & the Family, and her 1996 album Yolanda Live in Washington was nominated for a Grammy. Songs From the Heart followed in 1998, and a year later she returned with Mountain High Valley Low which topped her live album by winning a Grammy. In 2000 she ventured into new territory by issuing a Christmas album, A Yolanda Adams Christmas.
